TO RAISE OR NOT TO RAISE TRUCK DRIVER PAY

While the question of truck driver pay has divided drivers and carriers for a while now, Reliance Partners’ Vice President of Safety Brian Runnels “believes it’s a conversation worth having.” While trucking has always followed the model of not making money while wheels aren’t turning, Runnels believes “drivers today desire greater flexibility and aren’t as willing to trek 3,000 miles a week as previous generations did.” Read more…

JOHN LAWSON TRUCKING SCHOOL REOPENS

Newly reopened in a JD Food facility near Fresno, California, the John Lawson trucking school held a ribbon cutting ceremony this past Thursday. Funded by federal dollars through the Fresno Economic Development Corporation, “the school wants to double the number of students” to bring a whole new generation of truckers into the workforce. AMAZON CLOSING WAREHOUSES

Amazon.com Inc., has decided to cut down the size of its massive delivery operation amid slowing sales growth, and has abandoned many existing and planned facilities around the country:  “MWPVL International Inc., which tracks Amazon’s real-estate footprint, estimates the company has either shuttered or killed plans to open 42 facilities totaling almost 25 million square feet of usable space. The company has delayed opening an additional 21 locations, totaling nearly 28 million square feet, according to MWPVL. The e-commerce giant also has canceled a handful of European projects, mostly in Spain, the firm said.”  Read more…

LOGISTICS COMPANY BRINGING MORE JOBS TO VIRGINIA

The warehousing and transportation company A. Duie Pyle has opened three new centers in Virginia, including in Roanoke, Manassas and Richmonds. According to the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the business could create up to 75 jobs in all. Chairman and CEO Peter Latta said in a statement: “We have been planning to add locations in the Commonwealth of Virginia for some time, and we are thrilled to gather here today with our customers, local officials and business leaders to commemorate our expansion.”  Read more…

LOGISTICS LEADS FRONTLINE INDUSTRY SALARIES

Amongst the 8 million jobs created by the frontline industry, “logistics & mobility offers the highest average monthly salary of Rs 26,484, the report, Frontline Index 2022, by HRMS firm Betterplace said.  The average monthly salary of frontline workers increased from Rs 21,664 in FY21 to Rs 22,800 in FY22.”  Also in the report, youth dominated the workforce and workers tended to stay in their hometowns and states.  Read more…

PENNSYLVANIANS UNCOMFORTABLE SHARING ROAD WITH SELF-DRIVING TRUCKS

According to a RABA research poll, Pennsylvanians aren’t exactly ecstatic about sharing the road with self-driving trucks and other vehicles. When asked how comfortable they are “sharing the road with ‘highly automated, driverless vehicles,’ over half of respondents said they were either ‘somewhat uncomfortable’ or ‘very uncomfortable’ with the idea.”    Read more…

TRUCKING FOR KIDS CONVOY EVENT

On Sunday, September 18, the Maine Professional Drivers Association will be holding its 24th annual Trucking for Kids Convoy in “an effort to help Camp Sunshine and Camp POSTCARD raise funds for operations.” Activities will include:  a touch-a-truck event, a truck show, a driver competition, raffle items, food, and much more.   Read more… 

SURVEY SHOWS BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF THE TRUCKING PROFESSION

Last year, during the height of the supply and transport challenges resulting from the pandemic, a survey concluded that 96% of truck drivers felt their job was appreciated, while this year that number has dipped to 67%. Amongst other surveyed questions, “83% of U.S. truck drivers say they experience daily challenges with recent increases in fuel prices, and almost three quarters (74%) say they are concerned about the pressure to work longer hours due to the driver shortage.”  Read more…

WOMEN OWNED LP LOGISTICS TO CREATE NEW JOBS

Mackenzie & Paige Logistics, a women owned logistics company in Kentucky, will be opening their new headquarters in Florence in the near future. The company will commit $4 million into the new investment, “which is expected to create 210 jobs, including positions for at least 120 Kentucky residents.” Created in 2011, “M & P Logistics operates dry-van and refrigeration transportation, along with specialized options such as white glove deliviries, rail and port drayage (the transport of freight from a port or rail to a destination), and sprinter anf box truck expediting.”  Read more…
