LOGISTICS FREIGHT SECTOR HIT HARD

Layoffs keep impacting the freight industry as firms across the U.S. and Mexico announced 8,794 job cuts over the past several weeks. The workforce layoffs are part of companies operating in sectors such as trucking, warehousing, logistics, food suppliers and manufacturing. In the U.S., “companies announcing mass layoffs include Lacroix Electronics, FedEx, Frito-Lay, Blue Diamond Growers, Michaels Stores, Kohl’s, Target, JCPenney, Bilfinger Inc., Globe Motors and Geodis Inc., according to media reports and Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices.”

FREIGHT INDUSTRY DEMANDS TRUCK DRIVING JOBS

The truck driving  industry’s “driver shortage” argument has been around for decades. Citing nine studies, The American Trucking Associations (ATA) says there has been a nonstop shortage since 1987, but researchers and industry experts argue “the labor market functions well when freight demand is strong. A December 2024 study by Professors Jonathan Phares, Jason Miller, and Stephen Burks, published by the Association for Supply Chain Management, shows carriers hire drivers when freight demand rises and reduce staff when it falls.”

TRUCK DRIVER JOBS DECLINE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT MONTH

Truck driver jobs declined once again for the second straight month in a row, with drivers now asking themselves how many more jobs will disappear and how this will affect salaries. The latest dataset from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows “that nearly 3,000 truck driver jobs were lost in June. When revised, that means over 4,000 jobs have been cut in the past two months.” Read more…
