LOGISTICS INDUSTRY STUNNED WITH WIDER TARIFFS

President Donald Trump jolted the logistics industry on August 15 by enlarging his steel and aluminum tariffs to include “more than 400 consumer items that contain the metals, such as motorcycles and tableware. Customs brokers and importers in the U.S. were given little notice to account for the change, which went into effect Aug. 18 and did not exclude goods in transit.”

TRUCK DRIVER RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION FACE HEADWINDS

The quarter 2 2025 Driver Recruiting and Retention Data Download report found that “the pool of truck drivers declined in the second quarter even as the number of job postings grew.” The Professional Driver Agency and Conversion Interactive Agency put forth the report, which also stated that “67% of carriers are expecting to grow their fleet in the next 12 months. 130 TRUCK DRIVING JOBS AT RISK

Over 130 union mechanics and truck drivers in Tolleson Arizona are expected to lose their jobs by the end of August after grocery colossus Kroger ended its contract with a third-party transportation provider. For twenty plus years, “the Tolleson distribution center has kept shelves stocked for every Fry’s food store in Arizona. The drivers and mechanics—represented by Teamsters Local 104—work for Ruan Transportation, a company contracted to handle deliveries and vehicle maintenance for Kroger-owned Fry’s and Smith’s stores.”

TRUCK DRIVER JOBS DECLINE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT MONTH

Truck driver jobs declined once again for the second straight month in a row, with drivers now asking themselves how many more jobs will disappear and how this will affect salaries. The latest dataset from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows “that nearly 3,000 truck driver jobs were lost in June. When revised, that means over 4,000 jobs have been cut in the past two months.” Read more…

HOW ICE CREAM IS SPURRING INNOVATION IN THE LOGISTICS SECTOR

Ryder System, with $12.6 billion in revenue, is a top provider of logistics and transportation services with more than 50,000 employees in North America running a fleet of more than 250,000 trucks. Its evolution has come a long way since it was founded in 1933 by James Ryder with a single Model A Ford truck and a $35 down payment. About a decade ago, the Ryder board wanted CEO Robert Sanchez to focus on innovation and how to progress the company beyond the core strategy and services that had kept it alive for decades. Sanchez’s answer for this had its roots in a job he worked every weekend as a teenager: scooping ice cream at Carvel.
